Gibson hopes to make the cut

Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson is to be publicly circumcised as part of a move to rebuild his image, Mr Damian can reveal.

The move follows attempts by the Mad Max actor to regain the confidence of the Jewish and cinema going communities, after an anti-Semitic outburst during his arrest last month on suspicion of drink driving.

Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps please
Gibson, who won an Oscar for directing the epic Braveheart, has previously asked to meet Jewish groups to 'discern the appropriate path for healing,' after issuing in public statement in which he claimed his drunken outburst did not reflect his true views.

'Not the real me'
A statement issued by his team soon after the arrest said: 'Please know from my heart I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.'

Mr Damian understands that a suitably contrite Gibson, 50, met with Jewish leaders last week and that he asked them for advise and guidance on how to redress the 'damage' he had caused the Jewish community.

Bigot?
The actor who allegedly told his arresting officer: 'The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,' and asked him: 'Are you a Jew?' - is understood to have said that he 'would do anything' to 'right the wrong.'

At the meeting it was suggested that The Passion of the Christ director should seek to understand the Jewish faith further, and that part of his journey should involve the ritual circumcision.

According to sources close to the Hollywood star, it was his idea to sell tickets for the spectacle, which will take place at the Hollywood Bowl early next month. Profits from the event will go to Jewish charities across the world.

Singalong a circumcision
In a bid to embrace multi-culturalism, the event will also feature Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, who will sing his classic 'The First Cut Is The Deepest,' during the ceremony.

Gibson is expected to appear in court on drink-driving related charges on 28 September. At this stage it's unknown whether his act of public penitence will aid, or abet, his case, but the star has denied this is his motivation. 'This is about doing what's right,' he told us.
