The Big Snapple
According to the papers today, New York is turning itself from the Big Apple into the Big Snapple, after striking a deal yesterday worth $166m (£104m) sponsorship deal with the makers of Snapple (imperialist note it's owned by the still British company - Cadbury Schweppes). Anyone who has read No Label or Fast Food Nation will be far from surprised at this development, and equally worried by the fact that Snapple (it;s no helath product!) will have exclusive rights to place vending machines in the city's 1,200 public schools - expanding that to 6,000 machines across the city in offices and various city buildings. Both of these books list the way in which food and drinking corporation such as Burger King and Pepsi are taking out these sorts of deals across the US. Not only do they stifle competition, but clearly any right minded individual would be worried about the level of advertising for 'junk' products that their children, in particular, are being exposed to. More details about the Snapple deal available here. What next? Pro Plus also doing a deal with Mayor Bloomberg to ensure that NYNY really becomes the city that never sleeps?
